“Why do you follow Ursa?”

“Because God told me to.”

People do strange things. There we were, traveling through a mountain pass to battle, and we were talking of normal things as if nothing were wrong. Perhaps it was our way of hiding our fear, trying to shut out what we were about and why. At night, we slept out in the open, sometimes setting up lean-tos when necessary. The pass tended to be narrow, and we had little rain on the trek. When we broke into a wooded valley, we knew we were close to Xanivin. Imesch set up camp beneath the trees that ran along the rock face and deployed scouts to check the area. The scouts reported that the east wall of the city had crumbled thus contributing to the fall of the city. They had also found Douglas Stornaway, the mill keeper, who was able to tell us what happened.

“There was a horde of them.” Douglas, after all his years of being away from his small clan in Shana just thirty winding miles away, had not lost his Gaelic accent. “And we were doing just fine, just like before. I saw it with my own eyes. I’ve got a telescope in the top floor of my mill so I was able to see everything.”

Douglas stood before us, gray hair spiked in complete disorder, bagpipes under his arm, and a plaid sash draped over his shirt that hung down to his trousers.

“We would have still been a going if the wall hadn’t been blown. That General Almanzq, now he is a smart one. They sent us someone with more between his ears then just fluff. Too bad he is not on our side. Almanzq not only got past the two outer walls but took the city. Most of the others couldn’t take the first wall let alone the second. By the time they got to the city though, most of the civilians were evacuated. There are still a few down there that refused to leave. When the wall fell that was the last defense. Most of the men hid in the woods to wait for backup or went to join up with the Marshen forces.”

“Why didn’t you call for backup before then?” I asked, not understanding why they waited so long to tell everyone they were under siege and more than once.

“Xanivin is just the gate, missy. It’s not much more than a marker between east and west. It’s not even been that for the past year or so with the Spaniards making such a ruckus. The admiral wanted to make sure the real army was going to show before we tipped our hand. The real stronghold is in Marshen.”

“So we’re just here to aggravate the ones that are here and keep reinforcements from coming through.” I got the feeling that I was not being told everything, and I was right.

“Something like that,” Imesch said.

I gave Imesch a hard stare. “Thanks for keeping me so well informed, Captain.”

Imesch ignored my barbed comment.
